“Clean” has no legal definition in India. Any brand can print it on a pack, and it can mean anything or nothing.
So we wrote our definition down. Five rules, a free-from list with reasons, and every ingredient disclosed. You can hold us to all of it.
This is our own promise. It is not a third-party certification.
| We leave out | What it is | Why we leave it out |
|---|---|---|
| Parabens | A family of preservatives | Permitted parabens are allowed in cosmetics and we will not call them dangerous. Many people prefer to avoid them, so we use a different preservative, phenoxyethanol. |
| Sulfates (SLS, SLES) | Strong, low-cost cleansing agents | They clean well but can leave skin feeling tight and dry. We use four milder cleansing agents instead. |
| Silicones | Ingredients that give a silky, coated feel | Useful in leave-on products. A cleanser should rinse off clean, so they have no job here. |
| Synthetic fragrance | Added scent | Fragrance is a common reason people react to skincare. A face wash does not need a scent. |
Free-from is not the same as risk-free. Any ingredient, natural or synthetic, can disagree with someone’s skin. That is why the pack recommends a patch test before full use.
Clean is not a synonym for natural. Some of the most useful ingredients in this tube are made in a lab, and we are comfortable saying so.
Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside.
These are surfactants, the ingredients that lift oil and dirt so water can rinse them away. One is amino-acid-based, two are sugar-based, and one is there to make the blend milder. The formula is sulfate-free.
Panthenol, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Betaine, Sodium PCA, Allantoin.
Humectants hold water at the skin’s surface. They are why skin feels soft after washing instead of tight.
Ceramide NP, Centella Asiatica Extract, Rice Extract, Tocopherol.
A skin-identical lipid, two plant extracts with a long history in Korean and Asian skincare, and vitamin E as an antioxidant.
Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, PEG-150 Distearate.
A preservative, so a water-based product does not grow bacteria or mould. A chelating agent, to keep the formula stable. A pH adjuster, used in a tiny amount to set the gel at pH 5.5. A thickener, which makes it a gel. None of these is glamorous. All of them are necessary. A cleanser without a preservative is not clean. It is unsafe.
Aqua, Panthenol, Centella Asiatica Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Allantoin, Betaine, Sodium PCA, Ceramide NP, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside, PEG-150 Distearate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide, Tocopherol.

The exact percentage of each ingredient. That is the one part of a formula a brand keeps confidential. Everything else is on this page.
Two sets of rules decide what must be printed on a cosmetic sold in India. The Cosmetics Rules, 2020, made under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, cover what the product is and who made it. The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 cover quantity, price and consumer care details. Here is what to look for, on our tube or anyone else’s.
The label will also carry directions for use and any warnings. Read both before the first use.
If a tube sold as SKIN MATTERS is missing any of these, do not use it. Tell us
The Clean Label Promise on this page is our own standard. No outside body has audited or certified it, and we will not present it as if one has.
What the pack states today: paraben-free, sulfate-free, silicone-free, no synthetic fragrance, and made in India under manufacturing licence no. UP16320000048/2024.
If and when SKIN MATTERS obtains a third-party certification, it will be listed on this website with the name of the certifying body, the certificate number and its validity dates. If a certificate is not listed here, we do not hold it.
No. There is no legal definition of “clean” for cosmetics in India. What the law does regulate is what must be printed on the label, which ingredients are restricted or prohibited, and who may manufacture a cosmetic. That is why we publish our own definition instead of leaving the word vague.
No. The Clean Label Project is an independent organisation that runs its own certification programme. SKIN MATTERS does not hold that certification, or any other third-party “clean” certification. Our Clean Label Promise is a standard we set for ourselves.
No. The formula combines plant extracts with lab-made ingredients, including its preservative, its thickener and its cleansing agents. Nothing is chemical-free. Water is a chemical.
No, and it should not be. It is a water-based product, and water-based products need a preservative to stay safe. We use phenoxyethanol, which is not a paraben.
No product can promise that. The formula is designed to be gentle and is suitable for all skin types, but skin is individual. Patch test first, and stop using it if irritation occurs.
Check for the manufacturing licence number UP16320000048/2024, a printed batch number and a use-before date. If anything looks wrong, write to contact@myskinmatters.in with a photo of the tube and your order details.
If we change the formula, the ingredient list on the tube and on this site will change with it, and this page will say what changed and when.
