Do you have oily skin? Check the signs.

Skin type is about how much sebum your skin makes. Sebum is the natural oil your skin produces to keep itself soft and protected. Oily skin makes more of it, across the whole face.

Tick what sounds like you:

  • Your face looks shiny by late morning, even if you washed it before leaving home.
  • The shine is everywhere: forehead, nose, chin and cheeks, not only the centre of your face.
  • A tissue pressed on your face two hours after washing picks up oil from every area.
  • Your pores look larger, mostly on the nose and the cheeks next to it.
  • Sunscreen and makeup slide or separate within a few hours.
  • You get blackheads or clogged pores often.
  • Your skin almost never feels tight or flaky, even in winter.

Four or more: your skin is most likely oily. Keep reading.

Shine only on the forehead, nose and chin, with normal or dry cheeks: that is combination skin, and it needs a slightly different approach.

Oily and breaking out regularly: read the acne-prone page as well.

Oily skin needs a clean face. It does not need a stripped one.

Most face washes sold for oily skin are built on one idea: remove as much oil as possible. That feels good for about an hour. Then it goes wrong.

Your skin has a barrier. That is the outermost layer, made of skin cells held together by natural fats, and its job is to keep water in and irritants out. A harsh cleanser removes surface oil and takes some of that barrier with it. The result is a face that feels tight and dry right after washing and, for many people, looks greasy again by the afternoon. Oily and dehydrated at the same time is a real state, and it is common.

What a cleanser for oily skin should do

  1. Remove the day’s build-up. Sebum, sweat, sunscreen and pollution particles sit on your face as one film. That film has to come off, morning and night.
  2. Leave the barrier alone. Clean skin should feel soft and fresh. If it feels squeaky or tight, the cleanser took too much.
  3. Put some water back. Oily skin still needs hydration. Oil and water are different things. A face can have plenty of the first and not enough of the second.

Why this matters more in India

ConditionWhat it does to oily skinWhere harsh cleansers make it worse
HeatYou sweat more, and sweat mixes with sebum into a heavier filmYou wash three or four times a day with a strong face wash and strip the barrier each time
HumiditySweat does not evaporate, so skin feels sticky and looks shinierYou reach for the most drying product you can find, and end up tight in an AC room an hour later
PollutionDust and fine particles stick to an oily surface more easilyYou scrub to feel clean, and scrubbing irritates skin
Hard waterWater high in calcium and magnesium reacts with soap bars and leaves a residue that is difficult to rinse offBar soap plus hard water leaves a film on skin and a tight feeling after every wash

The answer is not a stronger face wash. It is a mild one, used properly, twice a day.

What is in this gel cleanser for oily skin, and why.

Every ingredient below is printed on the tube. Nothing here is a claim we cannot point to on the pack.

What oily skin needsWhat is in the formulaWhat it does
Oil, sweat and grime removed without a squeaky finishSodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Decyl GlucosideMild, amino-acid, betaine and glucoside-based cleansing agents. These are what lift oil and dirt off your skin. The formula is sulfate-free: no SLS, no SLES.
Water put back, without adding oilSodium Hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), Glycerin, Betaine, Sodium PCAHumectants, which are ingredients that hold water. Hyaluronic acid helps prevent dryness.
The barrier kept intactCeramide NPCeramides are fats that occur naturally in your skin barrier. Ceramide NP strengthens the skin barrier and locks in moisture.
Comfort after washingPanthenol, AllantoinPanthenol (pro-vitamin B5) hydrates and soothes.
Skin that tends to look red or irritated after cleansingCentella Asiatica ExtractCalms irritation and redness.
Smoother-feeling, brighter-looking skinOryza Sativa (Rice) ExtractBrightens, nourishes and improves texture.
Nothing heavy left behindNo silicones, no synthetic fragrance, no parabensThe formula is silicone-free, paraben-free and has no synthetic fragrance.

One thing this table does not contain: an oil-control or anti-acne active. There is no salicylic acid and no niacinamide in this formula. It is a cleanser. It cleans gently, and that is the whole job.

Why a gel based face wash for oily skin, at pH 5.5.

Why gel

A gel is water-based and light. It spreads easily on damp skin and rinses off without leaving a creamy or oily layer behind. For oily skin that matters, because a rich cream cleanser can feel like one more thing sitting on your face.

A gel cleanser for oily skin also works well in humid weather. It feels cool going on and clean coming off.

Large amounts of foam usually come from stronger cleansing agents, and foam is not what cleans your skin.

Why pH 5.5

pH is a scale from 0 to 14 that measures how acidic or alkaline something is. 7 is neutral. The surface of healthy skin is mildly acidic, around pH 5. That mild acidity is part of how the barrier stays in good shape.

Traditional soap bars are alkaline, often around pH 9 to 10. Washing with something that far from your skin’s own pH is one reason a face feels tight afterwards.

SKIN MATTERS Gentle Gel Cleanser is formulated at pH 5.5. It cleans close to the level your skin already sits at.

More on pH and why it matters

Twice a day. Not more.

The four steps

  1. Wet your face with cool or lukewarm water. Not hot. Hot water dries skin out.
  2. Apply a small amount and massage with your fingertips for 30 to 60 seconds. Spend the extra seconds on your forehead, nose and chin.
  3. Rinse well. Check the hairline and the sides of the nose, where cleanser tends to stay behind.
  4. Pat dry with a clean towel. Do not rub.

Before your first full wash, do a patch test. How to patch test

Morning

Wash once after you wake up. Overnight your skin produces sebum and you sweat into your pillow. A morning wash clears that before sunscreen goes on. Follow with a light moisturiser and sunscreen.

Night

Wash once before bed. This is the wash that matters most, because it removes the whole day. If you wore water-resistant sunscreen or heavy makeup, take that off first with a makeup remover or cleansing oil, then use the gel cleanser. We have not tested this cleanser as a makeup remover.

Follow with a moisturiser. Yes, even on oily skin. A light gel moisturiser is enough.

How often

Twice a day is the limit for most oily skin. A third wash is reasonable after a workout or a long commute in peak summer. If you are washing four or five times a day to chase shine, the washing has become the problem. Use blotting paper or a splash of plain water between washes instead.

Season notes

SeasonWhat changesWhat to do
Summer (March to June)More sweat, more sebum, more sunscreen to removeTwice daily, plus one wash after heavy sweating. Massage for the full 60 seconds at night.
Monsoon (July to September)High humidity, skin feels sticky all dayTwice daily. Resist the urge to add a third and fourth wash. Rinse with plain water if you need to feel fresh.
SeasonWhat changesWhat to do
Winter (November to February)Drier air, hot showers, heaters in the northTwice daily, with lukewarm water. If skin feels tight, you need more moisturiser afterwards, not a different cleanser.

What this cleanser will not do for oily skin.

We would rather you know this before you buy.

It will not

  • Reduce how much oil your skin makes. Sebum production is set by your genes, hormones and climate. No rinse-off cleanser changes it.
  • Keep you matte all day. You will be clean after washing. Shine will come back over the following hours, because that is what oily skin does.
  • Shrink your pores. Pore size is largely fixed. Clean pores can look less obvious, and that is as far as any cleanser goes.
  • Treat acne, blackheads or whiteheads. There is no salicylic acid or other anti-acne active in the formula. It is a cosmetic, not a medicine.
  • Replace moisturiser or sunscreen. It is on your face for a minute and then it is rinsed off.

It will

  • Remove oil, sweat and daily grime with mild, sulfate-free cleansing agents.
  • Leave skin feeling soft, fresh and supple, not tight, dry or squeaky.
  • Clean at pH 5.5.
  • Fit under any routine: wash first, then whatever serum, moisturiser or prescribed treatment you already use.

If what you want is a treatment for oiliness or breakouts, that is a job for a leave-on product or a dermatologist, used alongside a gentle cleanser like this one.

Oily skin and this face wash: questions and answers.

It is Korean in philosophy, not in origin. The formula follows the Korean approach to cleansing: low pH, mild cleansing agents, hydration built in, barrier first. It is formulated for Indian skin and climate and made in India, in Greater Noida. It is not imported.

Yes. Cleaning depends on the cleansing agents and on how long you massage, not on how harsh the product feels. This formula uses four mild cleansing agents that lift oil and dirt. Massage for 30 to 60 seconds and rinse well. The squeaky feeling you may be used to is not a sign of clean skin. It is a sign of stripped skin.

Twice: once in the morning and once at night. Add a third wash only after heavy sweating, such as a workout. Washing more often than that tends to leave skin tight and irritated, and it does not reduce oil.

No. It removes the oil that is on your face when you wash. It does not reduce how much oil your skin produces afterwards, and it has no oil-control active. We do not claim otherwise.

Yes. Oily skin can still be short of water. Use a light, gel-type moisturiser after cleansing, and sunscreen in the morning. Skipping moisturiser often leaves oily skin feeling tight and looking shinier.

Because it is sulfate-free. Heavy foam usually comes from sulfates such as SLS and SLES. Wetting your face properly first helps it spread.

It has not been tested as a sunscreen or makeup remover, so we do not claim that. It is a daily face wash for oil, sweat and grime. If you wear water-resistant sunscreen or heavy makeup, remove that first with a makeup remover or cleansing oil, then wash with the gel.

The approach. Most oily-skin face washes aim to remove as much oil as possible. The Korean approach is to clean at a low pH with mild cleansing agents and keep hydration in, so the barrier stays intact. This cleanser follows that approach and is made in India for Indian weather.

A clean face that still feels like skin.
