Is your skin acne-prone? It is about the pattern, not one pimple.

Everyone gets a spot now and then. Acne-prone skin is skin where pores clog easily and breakouts keep coming back.

Tick what sounds like you:

  • You have had breakouts most months for six months or longer.
  • You usually have blackheads or small skin-coloured bumps, even between breakouts.
  • New products, heavy creams or hair oil near your face often lead to new spots.
  • Breakouts cluster in the same places: forehead, chin, jawline, or under a helmet strap or mask.
  • Spots get worse in hot, humid weather or after sweating.
  • Marks stay behind for weeks after a spot has gone.

Three or more: your skin is acne-prone. A gentle cleanser is the right base. It is not the whole answer.

Words you will see

  • Sebum: the natural oil your skin makes.
  • Comedone: a clogged pore. An open one is a blackhead. A closed one is a whitehead.
  • Papule or pustule: a red, raised spot, with or without a visible head.
  • Nodule or cyst: a deep, painful lump under the skin. These need a dermatologist.

Acne is not a hygiene problem. Washing harder does not help.

Acne starts inside the pore, with sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria. It is driven by hormones and genetics. It is not caused by a dirty face, and you cannot scrub it away.

What harsh washing does is damage the skin barrier. The barrier is the outer layer of your skin that holds water in and keeps irritants out. Stripped skin is red, tight and sore, and that makes existing spots look and feel worse. It also makes acne treatments harder to tolerate, because most of them are drying on their own.

So the cleanser has a supporting role. Remove the day’s oil, sweat and sunscreen. Do no damage. Leave the skin in good enough shape for the treatment to do its work.

Common beliefs, checked

BeliefWhat is true
“Acne means my face is dirty.”Acne forms inside the pore. Surface dirt is not the cause.
“The more I wash, the fewer spots I get.”Washing more than twice a day irritates skin and does not reduce acne.
“Scrubs open up clogged pores.”Scrubbing inflamed skin makes it more inflamed.
“If it stings, it is working.”Stinging means irritation, not treatment.

Why gel

A gel is water-based and light. It spreads without pressure, so you are not dragging your fingers over sore spots. It rinses off completely and leaves no creamy layer on the skin.

Why pH 5.5

pH measures how acidic or alkaline something is, from 0 to 14. Healthy skin is mildly acidic at the surface, around pH 5. Soap bars are alkaline, often around pH 9 to 10, and washing with them can leave skin tight and dry. This cleanser is formulated at pH 5.5, close to the skin’s own level.

More on pH

Fingertips, lukewarm water, twice a day.

How to wash

  1. Wash your hands first.
  2. Wet your face with lukewarm water. Not hot.
  3. Apply a small amount with your fingertips. Massage lightly for 30 to 60 seconds. Do not press on or pick at spots. No cloth, sponge, brush or scrub.
  4. Rinse well, including the hairline, jawline and sides of the nose.
  5. Pat dry with a clean towel kept only for your face. Do not rub.

If you are using an acne treatment

Many acne treatments, including benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, salicylic acid and prescription medicines, can cause dryness, peeling and stinging, mostly in the first weeks. That is when a harsh face wash does the most harm.

A gentle cleanser does not replace the treatment and does not make it work better. It avoids adding to the dryness. Follow your dermatologist’s instructions on when and how to apply the treatment after washing. If your doctor has prescribed a specific medicated cleanser, use that one.

How often

Twice a day. Add one wash after heavy sweating, such as a workout or a long ride with a helmet. More than that irritates the skin.

Season notes

SeasonWhat changesWhat to do
SummerMore sweat, more sunscreenTwice daily, plus one wash after heavy sweating. Massage for a full minute at night.
MonsoonHumidity, sticky skin, damp towelsTwice daily. Change your face towel often and let it dry fully between uses.

What this cleanser will not do for acne.

This is the section most acne face wash pages leave out.

It will not

  • Treat, clear or cure acne. It is a cosmetic cleanser, not a medicine.
  • Prevent breakouts. Nothing in it is an anti-acne active.
  • Unclog pores or remove blackheads. It has no salicylic acid or other exfoliating acid.
  • Fade acne marks or scars. Marks need time, sunscreen and, in many cases, a dermatologist.
  • Reduce oil production. It removes the oil on your skin when you wash. That is all.

It will

  • Remove oil, sweat and daily grime with mild, sulfate-free cleansing agents.
  • Clean at pH 5.5, without scrub particles.
  • Leave skin feeling soft and fresh instead of tight, dry or squeaky.
  • Sit comfortably next to an acne treatment, as the gentle step in the routine.

If a face wash promises to clear acne on its own, ask what active it contains and at what strength. Ours contains none, and we say so.

When a face wash is not enough: see a dermatologist.

Acne is a medical condition. It is common, it is treatable, and a dermatologist can do far more for it than any product on a shelf. Do not wait if any of these apply.

See a dermatologist if

  • You have deep, painful lumps under the skin.
  • Your spots are leaving dark marks, dents or scars.
  • You have used over-the-counter products properly for six to eight weeks and seen no change.
  • Acne is spreading to your chest, back or shoulders.
  • It started suddenly as an adult, or came with irregular periods, hair thinning or new facial hair.
  • It began after you started a new medicine, supplement or cream.
  • It is affecting your mood, your confidence or how you live your day.

Until then, do not

  • Pick, squeeze or pop. It pushes inflammation deeper and raises the chance of marks and scars.
  • Take antibiotics or acne tablets without a prescription.
  • Layer several new actives at once. If your skin reacts, you will not know which one caused it.

A dermatologist will tell you which treatment to use. Bring your current products, including this cleanser, and ask where each one fits.

Acne-prone skin and this cleanser: questions and answers.

No. It is a gentle cleanser, not an acne treatment, and it contains no anti-acne active. It removes oil, sweat and grime without stripping your skin. For treating acne, see a dermatologist.

No. It contains neither, and no other anti-acne active. The full ingredient list is on the tube and on our ingredients page. If you want those actives, use them as a separate product.

Generally yes, since it is a mild cleanser with no actives of its own, but ask your dermatologist. Acne treatments often dry the skin, and a non-stripping cleanser is the usual companion. If your doctor has prescribed a specific cleanser, stay with that.

Because the wrong cleanser makes things worse. Harsh face washes and scrubs leave acne-prone skin dry, red and irritated, and that makes treatments harder to tolerate. A gentle cleanser keeps the skin clean and comfortable so the treatment can do its job.

No. Twice a day is enough, plus once after heavy sweating. Washing more often irritates the skin and does not reduce breakouts.

Stop using it and see how your skin responds over the next two weeks. This cleanser has no exfoliating active, so it is not the kind of product associated with a “purging” phase. New spots can have many causes, but if they began with a new product, pausing it is the sensible first step. Write to us at contact@myskinmatters.in and we will help with your order.

We suggest you do not, on acne-prone skin. Scrubs and brushes add friction to skin that is already inflamed. Fingertips and 30 to 60 seconds of light massage are enough.

The gentle step in your routine. Nothing more, nothing less.
