Is your skin sensitive? Here is how it usually shows.

Sensitive skin is not a skin type in the way oily or dry is. It describes how your skin reacts. You can be oily and sensitive, or dry and sensitive. What marks it out is that your skin objects to things other people’s skin ignores.

Tick what sounds like you:

  • New products often sting or burn in the first minute.
  • Your face feels tight or itchy after washing, with most cleansers.
  • Your cheeks or the sides of your nose turn red easily, from heat, a hot shower or rubbing with a towel.
  • Fragranced products make your skin prickle or itch.
  • Your skin reacts when the weather changes, or when you travel to a city with different water.
  • Scrubs, face brushes and strong actives leave your skin sore for a day or more.
  • You have a short list of products you trust and a long list you had to stop using.

Three or more: your skin is on the reactive side. A mild cleanser and a careful introduction matter for you.

This is more than sensitive skin

See a dermatologist, and do not rely on a cleanser, if you have:

  • Red, flaky or weeping patches that keep coming back.
  • Redness across the cheeks and nose that does not fade.
  • Swelling, hives or blisters after using a product.
  • Itching that wakes you at night.

These can be signs of conditions such as eczema, rosacea or an allergy. They need a diagnosis, not a face wash.

Not sure where you fit? Take the quiz

For reactive skin, the cleanser is the riskiest step.

You wash your face around 700 times a year. If your cleanser irritates your skin a little each time, that adds up faster than anything else in your routine.

Reactive skin usually has a barrier that is easier to disturb. The barrier is the outermost layer of your skin: cells held together by natural fats, keeping water in and irritants out. When it is weakened, more gets through, and your skin tells you about it with stinging, redness and tightness.

So the job of a cleanser here is narrow. Clean the skin. Disturb the barrier as little as possible. Leave nothing behind that could irritate.

What sets it off, especially in India

TriggerWhy it is a problemWhat helps
Soap bars and sulfate-heavy face washesStrong cleansing agents and a high pH remove more of the barrier’s natural fatsA mild, sulfate-free cleanser close to the skin’s own pH
Hard waterWater high in calcium and magnesium reacts with soap and leaves a residue that is hard to rinse offA cleanser that is not soap-based, rinsed thoroughly
Hot waterHeat dries the skin and makes redness worseCool or lukewarm water, every time
Heat, dust and pollutionSweat and particles sit on the skin all day, and the urge is to scrub them offGentle cleansing twice a day, fingertips only
Air conditioning and winter airDry air pulls water out of skin that is already struggling to hold itHumectants in the cleanser, moisturiser straight after
Added fragranceFragrance is one of the more common causes of reactions to skincareProducts with no synthetic fragrance

Look for

  • A stated pH close to the skin’s own.
  • Sulfate-free cleansing agents.
  • Hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients.
  • A short, clear ingredient list you can read before you buy.

Avoid

  • Scrub particles, beads and face brushes.
  • Strong added fragrance.
  • Anything that leaves your face feeling squeaky.
  • Introducing two new products in the same week. If your skin reacts, you will not know which one did it.

What is in the formula, mapped to what reactive skin needs.

“Formulated to be gentle” should mean something specific. This is what it means here.

What reactive skin needsWhat is in the formulaWhat it does
Cleansing without sulfatesSodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Decyl GlucosideMild, amino-acid, betaine and glucoside-based cleansing agents. No SLS, no SLES.
A pH close to the skin’s ownFormulated at pH 5.5, adjusted with Sodium HydroxideCleans close to the level your skin already sits at, so the barrier is disturbed less.
Support for the barrierCeramide NPStrengthens the skin barrier and locks in moisture.
Comfort during and after washingPanthenol, AllantoinPanthenol (pro-vitamin B5) hydrates and soothes.
Skin that reddens easilyCentella Asiatica ExtractCalms irritation and redness.
Water held in the skinSodium Hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), Glycerin, Betaine, Sodium PCAHumectants, which are ingredients that hold water. Hyaluronic acid helps prevent dryness.
Fewer common irritantsNo synthetic fragrance, no parabens, no silicones, no sulfatesThese are pack claims. Each one can be checked against the ingredient list.

Ingredients to check if you have known sensitivities

Gentle on most skin does not mean right for every skin. If a doctor has told you that you react to a specific ingredient, read the full list before you buy. In particular:

  • Plant extracts. The formula contains Centella Asiatica extract and rice (Oryza Sativa) extract. A small number of people react to plant extracts.
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine. A mild, widely used cleansing agent. A small number of people are allergic to it.
  • Phenoxyethanol. The preservative. Any water-based product needs one to stay safe to use.
  • Tocopherol. Vitamin E.

Full list, as printed on the tube: Aqua, Panthenol, Centella Asiatica Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Allantoin, Betaine, Sodium PCA, Ceramide NP, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside, PEG-150 Distearate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide, Tocopherol.

What each ingredient does

A gel that needs no rubbing, at a pH your skin recognises.

The gel

Friction is a trigger for reactive skin. The more you rub, the redder you get. A gel spreads on wet skin with almost no pressure, so your fingertips glide instead of drag. It has no scrub particles and nothing gritty.

It also rinses clean. That matters, because cleanser left on the skin, along the hairline or beside the nose, is a common and avoidable cause of irritation.

If you are used to a thick foam, this will feel quieter. That is intended.

The pH

pH measures how acidic or alkaline something is, on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 as neutral. The surface of healthy skin is mildly acidic, around pH 5. That acidity helps the barrier hold together.

Traditional soap bars are alkaline, often around pH 9 to 10. Each wash with an alkaline product pushes the skin’s surface away from where it wants to be, and skin with a fragile barrier takes longer to recover.

This cleanser is formulated at pH 5.5. It is a small number on the back of a tube, and for reactive skin it is one of the first things worth checking on any cleanser.

Why pH 5.5

Patch test first. Then go slowly.

Step zero: patch test

The pack recommends a patch test before full use. For reactive skin, treat that as a requirement.

  1. Wet a small area on your inner forearm.
  2. Massage in a little of the gel for about 30 seconds, leave it for 5 minutes, then rinse and pat dry.
  3. Check the spot after 24 hours. If it is clear, repeat the test on the same spot.
  4. Check again at 48 hours. If the spot is still calm, repeat the test once on a small area along your jawline and check it after 24 hours.
  5. No redness, itching, burning or bumps after that: move on to your full face.

If you see redness, itching, burning, swelling or bumps at any point, stop. Rinse the area with plain water and do not use the product on your face. If the reaction is strong or does not settle, see a doctor.

Full patch test guide

Your first two weeks

WhenWhat to do
Days 1 to 3Patch test only. Keep the rest of your routine exactly as it is.
Rest of week 1Use it once a day, at night. Do not add any other new product.
Week 2 onwardsIf your skin is comfortable, use it morning and night.

How to wash

  1. Wet your face with cool or lukewarm water. Never hot.
  2. Apply a small amount with your fingertips. Massage lightly for about 30 seconds. No cloth, sponge or brush.
  3. Rinse well, including the hairline and the sides of the nose.
  4. Pat dry with a soft, clean towel. Do not rub.
  5. Apply moisturiser within a minute or two, while skin is still slightly damp.

Keep it away from your eyes. If it gets in, rinse with plenty of water.

Morning and night

Night: this is the wash that matters. It removes sunscreen, sweat and the day’s dust.

Morning: if your skin feels comfortable, wash with a small amount. If your skin is having a bad week, a rinse with plain water in the morning and the cleanser at night is enough.

Season notes

SeasonWhat changesWhat to do
SummerHeat and sweat cause flushing and stingingCool water. Wash after heavy sweating instead of letting sweat dry on your skin. Do not exceed twice a day plus that one extra wash.
MonsoonHumidity, and often a change in tap water qualityRinse thoroughly. Dry your face with a clean towel, changed often.
WinterDry air, heaters and hot showersLukewarm water only. Once a day may be enough. Moisturise immediately.
TravelDifferent water, different climateDo not introduce anything new on a trip. Take what your skin already knows.

What we can and cannot promise sensitive skin.

Skincare for sensitive skin is full of words that sound like guarantees. We would rather be exact.

What we cannot say

  • It will not treat a skin condition. Eczema, rosacea, dermatitis and allergies need a doctor. This is a cosmetic cleanser, not a medicine.
  • It will not repair a damaged barrier on its own. It is on your skin for under a minute. What it can do is avoid making things worse while your moisturiser and time do the rest.
  • It will not suit everyone. Some people will react to an ingredient in it. That is why the patch test comes first.

What we can say

  • It is formulated to be gentle: mild, sulfate-free cleansing agents at pH 5.5.
  • It has no synthetic fragrance, no parabens and no silicones.
  • It contains ceramide NP, panthenol, centella asiatica extract, rice extract and hyaluronic acid.
  • Every ingredient is listed on the tube and on this page, so you can check it against what you know about your own skin.
  • It is made in India.

Do not use it if

  • You are allergic to any ingredient on the list.
  • Your skin is broken, raw or weeping.
  • Your patch test caused a reaction.
  • A dermatologist has given you a specific cleanser to use for a diagnosed condition. Stay with that unless they say otherwise.

Sensitive skin and this cleanser: questions and answers.

It is formulated to be gentle, but we cannot promise it will suit your skin. It has a pH of 5.5, is sulfate-free and has no synthetic fragrance. Do a patch test before using it on your face.

It contains no synthetic fragrance. That is the claim on the pack. No fragrance has been added to make it smell a certain way.

Stop using it straight away. Rinse your face with cool, plain water and do not apply anything new. If the redness, itching or swelling is strong, spreads, or has not settled within a day or two, see a doctor. Then write to us at contact@myskinmatters.in so we can help with your order.

A cleanser should not sting or burn. If you feel more than a brief, faint sensation, rinse it off and stop. Check your water temperature first, since hot water alone can cause stinging. If it happens again with cool water, this product is not right for your skin.

Ask your dermatologist first. Those are medical conditions, and the right cleanser depends on your diagnosis and your treatment. Show them the ingredient list on this page. We do not claim this product treats or improves either condition.

Yes, once you have patch tested and your skin is comfortable with it. Start with once a day at night for the first week, then move to morning and night. On days when your skin feels raw, washing once is enough.

As little as possible. Introduce one new product at a time and give it two weeks. Use cool or lukewarm water, pat your face dry and moisturise straight after washing. Leave out scrubs and face brushes. Most irritation from cleansing comes from heat, friction and rushing, not only from the product.

Try it carefully. If it is not for your skin, tell us.
